Easy crochet easter eggs (3 sizes) - free pattern - Craft Fix (1)

These crochet easter egg decorations are really quick and easy to make, so ideal for last minute Easter crafting. Choose from 3 sizes: crochet a mini egg in minutes, or make a medium or large egg that still fits in your hand in under an hour. You only need a small amount of yarn, so this is perfect for using up scraps of leftover wool or cotton.

Table of Contents

Materials & Notes

  • 3.5mm (size E) crochet hook with a small amount of DK yarn. I used Drops Merino Extra Fine, in shades 25 pink and 26 pistachio, and Drops Karisma in shade 69 light grey green (which looks like duck egg blue).
  • Polyester toy stuffing or you could stuff with wool etc if you prefer.
  • Tapestry needle for gathering the ends & weaving in ends.
  • For optional hanging loops: scraps of 4 ply yarn and a 3mm (size D) crochet hook suggested. Heavier weight yarn with a larger hook is ok either, but it makes a chunkier loop.

Using thicker or thinner yarn

Tension is not important here so you canuse any weight yarn. Your egg will just be a slightly different size. Use a hook a bit smaller than the standard size for your yarn so your stuffing won’t show through the egg.

You can use a 4mm (size G) crochet hook with worsted or aran yarn to make slightly larger eggs. Or try finer 4 ply or sock yarn with a 2.5-3mm hook for smaller more delicate eggs.

Crochet techniques used

  • These easter eggs are crocheted using the spiral style. So each round is continuous without slip stitch joins etc.
  • Each egg starts with a magic circle (see video demo).
  • For decreases, work into the next 2 front loops only for a neater finish (video demo).

Abbreviations (US crochet)

  • R: round
  • st: stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together to decrease by 1 stitch

Add a loop to hang your egg

You can display your egg decorations in a basket or bowl. They will also stand with a bit of patience if you press them down slightly and let them settle on their base.

If you would like to hang your eggs on an Easter tree, it’s quick and easy to crochet a hanging loop. 4 ply yarn makes a nice, neat loop that’s not too chunky. But whatever you have to hand will work. Just use the recommended hook size or slightly smaller.

  1. Using 4 ply yarn and a size D (3mm) crochet hook, insert your hook through your egg around the top point. Leave a long yarn tail for weaving in to your egg at the end. Yarn over hook and pull a loop of yarn back through to you.
  2. Make 30 chain from here, or double the length of your desired loop.
  3. Slip stitch to the starting point to secure. Knot both ends of loop yarn together and weave into the egg.
