Learn how to crochet the front loop only single crochet stitch in this step by step tutorial. The single crochet is usually worked under both loops of a stitch. To crochet under the front loop, you will work into the loop closest to you.

The front loop sc is an easy stitch to make. You will need to know where the front loop is on a stitch. Then you’ll know exactly where to put your crochet hook.

I’ve included photos for each step of crocheting in the front loop below. This tutorial uses the single crochet stitch to show the front loop, but you can use any crochet stitch.

Yarn

The front loop crochet stitches work up fantastic in most yarns. I love how it gives the fabric a little stretch. And when you crochet the front loop stitches and pair them with back loop stitches, or even regular crochet stitches the result is amazing texture.

A little crochet tip I’ve learned is when my hook is having trouble gliding through the stitches, I can use the front loop or back loop stitch to make it easier. Just working to get the hook under one loop instead of two works like a charm.

  • For this tutorial I’m using my Furls Streamline Swirl* in Virgo size (I) 5.5mm and Vanna’s Style a #3 lightweight yarn.

  • any weight yarn, I'm using a #3 light weight yarn

Tools

  • crochet hook compatible with your yarn, I'm using a 5.5mm (I) hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. How to Crochet Front Loop Only Single Crochet Stitch (3)Row 1. Start with a row of regular single crochet stitches. Here I have 16 fsc, or you can ch 17, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn. (16 sts)

Notes

Alternatively you may consider starting and ending each row with a regular single crochet-under both loops.

You can also alternate front loop only stitches with back loop only stitches for an even more textured fabric.
