Vent’anni e non sentirli. Erasmus Mundus, il programma di mobilità promosso dalla Commissione europea nato nel 2004 per migliorare l'eccellenza dell'istruzione superiore europea, in questi anni ha offerto la possibilità a 50mila giovani talentuosi provenienti da ogni parte del mondo di fare un'esperienza di studio di alto livello in più sedi universitarie e di ottenere i titoli di studio nelle varie sedi frequentate. L’Università di Trento ha aderito fin da subito all’iniziativa. UniTrentoMag ha raccolto le testimonianze di tre giovani che stanno partecipando a questa importante iniziativa europea promossa da Bruxelles.

La nostalgia della famiglia e delle amicizie è tanta, le difficoltà non mancano – dalla burocrazia ai problemi legati al visto per il soggiorno in Italia, alle differenze culturali e linguistiche, al doversi spostare ogni semestre da un paese all’altro. Ma la caparbietà, la determinazione nel raggiungere i propri obiettivi, la capacità di adattamento, sono più forti. Arrivano dall’Argentina, dalla Spagna, dal Pakistan. Maria Paz Oliva, Pablo Jose Perez Canavate, Muhammad Waqas Saleem, hanno scelto UniTrento per seguire una parte del loro percorso in Erasmus Mundus. Sono studenti eccellenti selezionati per seguire programmi dagli elevati standard accademici. Al momento all’Ateneo trentino sono attivi 3 progetti: International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) della Scuola di Studi Internazionali, European Joint Masters in Management and Engineering of Environment and Energy (ME3+) del Dicam e l’European Masters Program in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) che coinvolge il Centro interdipartimentale Mente/Cervello. Proprio di LCT il Cimec ha ospitato, il 17 e 18 giugno, il meeting annuale.
Maria Paz, specializzata in neuroscienze legate al linguaggio all’Università di Buenos Aires, dopo il primo anno in Spagna adesso è a Rovereto dove sta approfondendo la parte di linguistica computazionale abbinata alle neuroscienze. «Grazie all’ European Masters Program in Language and Communication Technologies ho potuto combinare le due aree di studio»ci dice spiegando perché ha scelto proprio l’Università di Trento.
Pablo frequenta IMSISS. Dopo aver trascorso il primo semestre all'Università di Glasgow, sta concludendo a Trento il secondo semestre del primo anno alla Scuola di Studi Internazionali. «Durante la mia laurea a Madrid, ho studiato storia e politica. Mi interessano molti aspetti delle relazioni internazionali – racconta – dalla sicurezza, agli studi strategici, a tutto ciò che riguarda il conflitto, la diplomazia o l'evitare i conflitti. Per questo ho scelto IMSISS. Trento inoltre offre la possibilità di averne una conoscenza ampia e multidisciplinare». Il percorso di Muhammad è orientato invece alla sostenibilità energetica e ambientale. Partecipa a ME3+ che fa riferimento alla laurea magistrale in Energy Engineering – interateneo tra Trento e Bolzano. Prevede la mobilità anche all’Università di Tecnologia e di Economia di Budapest e all’Institut Mines Telecom Atlantique (Francia). «La mia laurea – esordisce - è in Ingegneria del petrolio e del gas. Quindi non è molto sostenibile. Nel 2019 ad Abu Dhabi abbiamo presentato un’idea su come possiamo integrare le energie rinnovabili nell'industria del petrolio e del gas. E quella è stata la svolta per me. In quel momento ho capito quanto stia aumentando la temperatura della nostra terra. Prima di allora non conoscevo la sostenibilità. Successivamente – aggiunge – ho iniziato a lavorare in una società nel settore dell'energia solare. Ho cercato così una laurea magistrale che combinasse i due ambiti. Questo programma ha una formula perfetta, unisce il management e l’ingegneria. È come se nella mia laurea di primo livello avessi creato il problema e nella laurea magistrale stia cercando di risolverlo». Tutti e tre sono convinti che questa esperienza segnerà in modo determinante il loro futuro professionale.
«Erasmus Mundus ha aperto una strada nuova – riflette Maria Paz – che è quella della linguista computazionale. Con lo sviluppo di app come chat GPT oggi c’è molta richiesta di linguisti computazionali. E questo è quello che voglio fare nella mia vita».
Pablo non ha dubbi dell’importanza del titolo ottenuto con questo programma: «Da un punto di vista professionale, è prestigioso avere un diploma di laurea magistrale proveniente da diverse università. È una cosa che, per quanto ne so, è molto apprezzata da chi seleziona il personale».
«Per me è un traguardo di vita perché nessuno nella mia famiglia ha mai fatto un master» – confida Muhammad. «A livello personale questa esperienza mi ha cambiato molto. Mi ha reso più paziente, più adattabile. Come ho già detto, ho cambiato settore e stavo cercando proprio questo tipo di programma. In futuro vorrei lavorare come ingegnere energetico o fare ricerca».
L’Università di Trento ha aderito fin da subito a Erasmus Mundus. Una scelta convinta, premiata dai risultati, come sottolinea Claudia Tarzariol, della Divisione Relazioni Internazionali. «L’Università di Trento è stata pioniere nello sviluppo di percorsi di studio integrati e internazionali, quindi ha prontamente aderito all’iniziativa Erasmus Mundus. Nel corso dei venti anni del programma, l'Ateneo ha partecipato a dieci progetti di corsi congiunti e tre preparatori ad essi, oltre a 22 consorzi per mobilità extra-UE nelle precedenti programmazioni europee. Erasmus Mundus – continua – ha contribuito all’internazionalizzazione della nostra Università, accrescendone l’esposizione, la visibilità ed il riconoscimento all’estero».

Erasmus Mundus: Twenty Years and Counting
UniTrentoMag has interviewed three young people who are participating in this key European programme

Over the years Erasmus Mundus, the European Commission's mobility programme launched in 2004 to promote the excellence of European higher education in the world, has given the opportunity to 50,000 talented students from all over the world to attend high-level European universities and obtain their qualifications. The University of Trento immediately joined the programme.
They all miss their families and friends, and they all had to go through the same process to obtain a visa to study in Italy, face cultural and linguistic challenges, move every semester from one country to another. But they are determined to achieve their goals and have a great adaptive capacity: Maria Paz Oliva, Pablo Jose Perez Canavate and Muhammad Waqas Saleem, from Argentina, Spain and Pakistan, chose UniTrento for part of their Erasmus Mundus journey. They are excellent students who have been selected to attend programmes with high academic standards.
UniTrento currently participates in 3 projects that welcome Erasmus Mundus students: the International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) of the School of International Studies, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree in Management and Engineering of Environment and Energy (ME3+) of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering - DICAM, and the European Master Program in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT), which involves the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences.
On 17 and 18 June, Cimec hosted the annual meeting of LCT. Maria Paz, with a specialization in language neuroscience earned at the University of Buenos Aires, spent her first year in Spain and is now in Rovereto where she is studying computational linguistics combined with neuroscience. «Thanks to the European Master Program in Language and Communication Technologies, I was able to combine these two areas of study» – she says, providing the reason why she chose UniTrento.
Pablo attends the IMSISS. After spending the first semester at the University of Glasgow, he is attending the second semester of his first year at the School of International Studies in Trento. «I took history and politics for my undergraduate degree in Madrid. I am interested in many aspects of international relations – he says – from security to strategic studies to everything related to conflicts, diplomacy and avoiding conflict. This is why I chose the IMSISS. Besides, Trento offers the opportunity to learn a lot about these subjects and with a multidisciplinary approach».
The focus of Muhammad's studies instead is environmental sustainability. He is a student of ME3+, which involves the inter-university Master's degree in Energy Engineering of the universities of Trento and Bolzano. As part of the programme, he will also study at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Institut Mines Telecom Atlantique (France). «My Bachelor's degree - he says - is in Oil and Gas Engineering. Therefore it's not very sustainable. In 2019 in Abu Dhabi we presented an idea on how to integrate renewable energy into the oil and gas industry. And that was the turning point for me. In that moment, I understood how much the earth temperature is rising. I didn't know about sustainability before. Then – he adds – I started working in a company in the solar energy sector. So I looked for a master's degree that combined the two areas. This programme is perfect, as it combines management and engineering. It's as if I were studying for this master's degree to try to solve the issues I have learned about in my undergraduate degree». The three students are convinced that this experience will play a crucial role in shaping their professional future.
«Erasmus Mundus has opened a new path for me – reflects Maria Paz – that of computational linguistics. With the development of apps such as chatGPT computational linguists are in high demand today. And that's what I want to do in my life».
Pablo has no doubts about the importance of the degree he will obtain with this program: «From a professional point of view, a master's degree that includes experiences in different universities is a plus. It is a prestigious qualification that recruiters hold in high regard».
«This is a life goal for me because no one in my family has ever earned a master's degree»– admits Muhammad. «On a personal level, this experience has changed me a lot. It made me more patient, more adaptable. Like I said, I've changed my area of study and I was looking for just this kind of programme. In the future, I would like to work as an energy engineer or do research».The University of Trento joined Erasmus Mundus from the beginning. The results achieved have been extremely positive, as Claudia Tarzariol, of the International Relations Office, points out. «The University of Trento was a pioneer in the development of integrated and international programmes of study, so it joined the Erasmus Mundus programme right from the start. During the twenty years of the programme, the University has participated in 10 joint degree programmes and 3 preparatory courses, and in 22 non-EU mobility consortia in previous European programming periods. Erasmus Mundus has contributed to the internationalisation of our University, making it more visible and recognizable abroad».
