Like a Stormtrooper it often misses its mark, but sometimes it surprises and nails the shot. The last third of the game is vastly superior and shows some great promise, while the smart skill system and many small improvements on Ubisoft’s open-world template all give me hope that the French publisher is willing to move away from its bloated, rote designs.

Massive Entertainment's Star Wars Outlaws open world scoundrel adventure shows a lot of promise, but it's bogged down by a few too many issues.

Star Wars Outlaws is a fun intergalactic heist adventure with great exploration, but it’s hindered by simple stealth, repetitive combat, and a few too many bugs at launch.

Star Wars Outlaws is Ubisoft's most ambitious game in years, but it plays the basics way too safe.

A lacklustre story, a bizarre lack of polish for a production of this scale, and a main character that isn’t the step forward she should have been all hold the game back from excellence.

A beguiling mix of open world exploration, mild criminality, and Star Wars flavour that, while it has its flaws, is one of the most enjoyable space adventures of recent years.

Exploring the galaxy in Star Wars: Outlaws is a blast, and the open-world gameplay perfectly fits the franchise. Kay might not be the most exciting protagonist ever, and the main story suffers as a result. However, the environments are well-crafted, and the gameplay is entertaining enough to compensate for it. Massive managed to avoid many issues that Ubisoft titles are often criticized for, and Outlaws is a must-play for any Star Wars fan.

If you enjoy the Ubisoft structure of games but have been overwhelmed by them lately, thankfully Outlaws avoids most of the pitfalls. I feel safe in recommending Star Wars Outlaws to anyone who is a Star Wars fan who is looking for a solid story in the beloved universe, with stealth-focused gameplay that allows you to truly live the life of a scoundrel on the Outer Rim.

Star Wars Outlaws has action, adventure and a lot of heart. And surely that would have been enough, but far from being conservative, here we see a Ubisoft that dares to trust the player when designing its open worlds (or planets), thus perfecting a formula in which they are the masters. There is no doubt about it: this is the way.

Star Wars Outlaws is an open world scoundrel-'em-up that clearly builds on Ubisoft's familiar format, but that's not a bad thing. The rep system in particular is interesting, as the constant fluctuations belie any kind of loyalty you might show otherwise, but most importantly, this game lets you just be in the enduring Star Wars Universe. It's not perfect, but stealing for crime syndicates, fighting the Empire, speeding across alien landscapes, and so much more is a dream come true.

Outlaws is at its best when it’s telling you a story. I was immediately invested in Kay and Nix and loved going on this journey with them. I didn’t skip a single cinematic or hurry through dialogue and, as a casual Star Wars fan, I would say that’s a big win for the folks at Massive Entertainment. There were certainly some places where the gameplay felt repetitive, but climbing, grappling, and taking out my foes in chaotic battles with my Blaster always felt satisfying. Working with Nix to solve puzzles or stealth through areas was a treat. Now that I’ve beaten the story, I’m not sure I’ll spend much time in the open world, but Outlaws did such a good job that I’m thinking of digging into some of the movies and television shows I’ve been passing on. That’s about as big a compliment as I can give the story.

It's not the perfect action-adventure that hopeful fans were expecting, but Star Wars Outlaws remains an enjoyable open world experience in both narrative and gameplay.

Star Wars Outlaws throws itself at you with abland stealth system and a significant lack of animations, but if you can see past all that, you'll find a rich universe filled with things to do. It captures the essence of Star Wars, I just wish it had translated a little better to the format.

The idea of a Star Wars game focusing entirely on the world of outlaws in its seedier parts of the universe is a great one, but it deserved a different kind of game than Star Wars Outlaws, instead of being suited for something more like Shadows of Doubt, Disco Elysium or even L.A. Noire. Even a straight, linear action game would be better. Instead, we get a boring, open-world monstrosity with uninspired gameplay, way too many useless features and a constant deluge of uninteresting side content. Kay and company deserve way better and so do the players. Save your credits and wait for something like a solo Kessel Sabacc game instead.

It's hard to get enthusiastic about Outlaws' weak stealth and combat, film-set worlds, and half-hearted nods at a more conceptually experimental game. Still, it's a perfectly ok bit of Star Wars entertainment with some great, authentic moments.
